SEO Checklist for Web Developers and Designers

June 18th, 2011 For any website design to provide effective results, it should have search engine optimization guidelines Using keyword rich | 24 comments

In website design development industry it is common belief that developing or designing a web site keeping seo techniques in mind is not very important. But nowadays it is crucial for website developers and designers to know seo website design steps.

Many believe that seo optimization is only for search engine experts and not for website design development team, which is not correct. If the site you design is not SE friendly then it is quite possible that it will lose considerable amount of visitor traffic. As a web developer or designer if you keep the following points in mind then you can make the site friendlier for search engines & help with site’s ranking.

Issues with Splash Pages

Splash pages do look nice & attractive but actually they create a lot of problems with search engine optimization. Several websites have only a large banner image with a link which says "Click to Enter", the home page of the site get the bulk of the traffic coming to site and if it is just a splash page with flash object on it then the links in the flash will not be read by search engines & you will lose a lot of value from your home page. So it is well advised to have a correctly HTML designed home page for the site.

Theme Design with Use of Versions

Many web designers utilize theme design set in sublevel directories like site.com/v3, v4, v5 & afterwards redirect to newly created folder. From SEO perspective, website designers should know that changing main root folder at frequent intervals results in site loosing backlinks that had developed for the site & also the ranking that it had gained.

Using "Click Here" as Anchor Text

Almost 80% of the website use "Learn More" or "Click Here" as the text for linking to other pages on the site, which is quite wrong. You need to make use of proper keywords for linking to other pages so that you are able to generate more backlinks for those pages on specific targeted keywords.

Images without Description

All sites have images & images make the site more attractive for visitors to browse but as a web developer you need to be aware that search engines cannot read images. Search engines understand what the image is about from it description which you have to provide by way of ALT tag. By ALT tags search engines are able to relate the image to rest of the text on the page as well as know what the image is about.

To conclude we will say that search engines are not too concerned about the server side script you use or the CMS, they are more concerned about the final output that is delivered to visitors in HTML format. So it important for us as website design development professionals to develop well HTML formatted site which search engines can read & understand properly.
